Tooth - Colored Fillings

Q. What is it?
A. Composite fillings are often referred to as white fillings and are made from a combination of special resins and porcelain powder. They can be colored to match your teeth and besides looking better than amalgam fillings they bond better to the teeth.

Q. Are they as strong as metal fillings?
A. Composite fillings at first were prone to wearing down, but now are just as durable as metal fillings. They bond better to the tooth and don't require as much tooth removed in order to hold in place. We consider composite fillings to be superior in that they look better, bond better to tooth surfaces and are more natural than hard metal.

Q. I heard that the old metal fillings contain mercury and aren't safe?
A. Mercury is used in the composition of amalgam, but have been proven to be safe and stable. We chose to use composite fillings because we feel it is a superior material and has several structural and bonding advantages over amalgam. If you have amalgam filling in your teeth you have no need for concern.
